How to be in Control of Your Week

Another weekend went by and you were productive and had a lot of fun with your family and friends. Come Sunday evening, reality sets in that the workweek starts again tomorrow.

On Sundays anxiety and overwhelm may set in when thinking about your busy week ahead. This overwhelm can come from:

  • Overscheduling yourself with too many things throughout the week
  • Not having a schedule or plan to help keep your tasks organized
  • Low focus and energy from lack of certainty around new obligations that might come up

All of these lead to feeling overwhelmed and maybe you even feel weighed down by your to-do list. That’s often when we feel like we’re just reacting to things where we feel like we’re lacking control, instead of being proactive and feeling in control. Cue overwhelm!

A client recently shared that she has been feeling off track because traveling and having visitors stay with her had impacted her routine. Not meal planning, prepping and cooking was impacting her food choices so she was feeling stuck in a plateau. This led her to feeling a bit anxious and that her weeks were weighing her down.

When digging deeper, we discovered that it wasn’t really that she was out of her routine of cooking and meal planning, it was that she wasn’t clear on what she had coming up each week so she was being reactive instead of proactive and that was what was leading to her feeling controlled by her week instead of feeling in control of her week. The solution we discussed is getting clear on Sundays about what she has coming up each week.

To help take the uncertainty out of your week, meal prepping doesn’t necessarily need to be the only solution. It could be as simple as taking a look at your schedule on Sunday so you have an idea of what’s coming up, thinking about what time you’ll eat dinner, writing your schedule down in a planner, or scheduling in a few minutes for yourself. Next time you are feeling panicked on a Sunday night, ask yourself:

  • What are my intentions for the week? How can I go into the week feeling prepared?
  • Do I have my tasks scheduled? Is there any free time in case something unexpected comes up during the week? And, if something unexpected does come up, is it something you feel obligated to do, or is it something you want to do?

Just by taking some time to look ahead on Sunday can be helpful to sort out your week so you can be proactive instead of reactive. It also helps so you can set intentions for the week of what you can take on, if anything. This type of planning is the difference between controlling your week and feeling controlled by the week.
